Exploring 3D grids and seismic volumes with the Inspector

Using the JewelExplorer and Object Inspector, you can easily change the display of 3D grids and seismic volumes to gain greater insight into your data.

Displayed by default on the right of your screen, you can show and hide the Inspector pane by selecting Panes > Inspector from the Workspace button group in the Strip or pressing CTRL + F3 on your keyboard.

First select the grid or seismic volume that you wish to explore in the JewelExplorer so that it is shown in your 3D View. Then click the icon in the Inspector pane. The Slices and Volume sliders should now be shown.

Viewing 3D grids

For a 3D grid, check the Full volume check box in the JewelExplorer to hide or show the full volume of the selected grid or uncheck it and check the I, J or K slice check boxes to see individual grid slices. Then use the slider bars in the Object Inspector to cut away from the full volume and grid slices to gain a better view of the grid.

  • The slider bars under Slices in the Object Inspector work in combination with the respective 'I slice', 'J slice' and 'K slice' items in the JewelExplorer. Use these sliders to show the individual slices of the respective I/J/K slice items.
  • The slider bars under Volume in the Object Inspector control the start and end of the 'Full volume', 'I slice', 'J slice' or 'K slice' items in the JewelExplorer.

Apart from dragging the slider bars or typing their respective numbers in the boxes in the Object Inspector, you can also move through a slice step by step, by using the left and right arrows on your keyboard (make sure you selected the corresponding slider bar by clicking on it first). The Lock ranges check box allows you to move the 3D grid boundaries without changing the grid size - if you move the start slider, the end slider will also change so that the number of I, J, or K slices displayed will remain the same.

Viewing seismic volumes

You can also resize and move seismic slices and volumes directly in the 3D View. Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard and drag with your mouse to move a slice or volume. Hold down the Ctrl key and drag a corner to resize a slice or volume.

For a seismic volume, check the Volume check box in the JewelExplorer to hide or show the full volume of the selected seismic volume, or uncheck this and check the Inline, Crossline or Depthslice check boxes. Then use the slider bars in the Object Inspector to adjust the crossline, inline, and depthslice.

The Lock ranges option allows you to move a set volume of inline, crossline and depthslices through the seismic cube without changing the volume size.
